What Is Spravato Treatment?

Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression who haven't found relief from other antidepressants. If you've tried two or more medications without success, Spravato offers a new path forward.

Unlike traditional antidepressants that can take weeks to work, many patients experience improvement within hours or days. Spravato works differently than other depression medications by targeting NMDA receptors in the brain, helping to restore neural connections that depression has weakened.

Treatment takes place in our comfortable, private treatment spaces. Each session lasts about 2 hours, including monitoring time. You'll self-administer the nasal spray under our supervision, then rest while we monitor your response.

What to Expect at Your Spravato Appointment

1

Initial Consultation

We'll review your depression history, previous treatments tried, and determine if Spravato is right for you. We handle all insurance verification and pre-authorization paperwork. This virtual (or in-person) consultation typically takes 30-45 minutes.

2

Treatment Session

You'll arrive at our comfortable treatment room and we'll check your blood pressure. You'll self-administer the nasal spray under our supervision. The actual administration takes just a few minutes. Plan to spend about 2 hours total including monitoring time.

3

Monitored Rest Period

After administration, you'll rest in our private treatment space while we monitor you. Many patients describe feeling relaxed or drowsy. You can listen to music, watch TV, or simply rest. We check on you regularly and monitor your vital signs.

4

Going Home

After about 2 hours of monitoring, once your provider confirms you're stable, you can go home. You'll need someone to drive you. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or next morning. Initially, you'll come twice a week, then once weekly, then monthly for maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spravato

Common questions about the treatment, recovery, and results

Many patients notice improvement within hours or days of their first treatment, though it typically takes 2-4 weeks to see full effects. This is much faster than traditional antidepressants which can take 6-8 weeks or longer.

Treatment begins with twice-weekly sessions for 4 weeks, then once weekly, then transitions to once every 1-2 weeks for maintenance. Many patients continue maintenance treatment long-term to prevent depression from returning. Your provider will work with you to find the right schedule.

Common side effects during treatment include dizziness, nausea, dissociation (feeling disconnected), increased blood pressure, and drowsiness. These typically resolve within 1-2 hours after treatment. That's why we monitor you for 2 hours before you leave. Most patients tolerate Spravato well.

No. You cannot drive for 24 hours after Spravato treatment. You'll need someone to drive you home from your appointment. Most patients can return to normal activities the same evening or next morning.

No. Spravato is used alongside your existing antidepressant medication, not instead of it. Continue taking your regular medications as prescribed. Your provider may adjust them over time as you improve.

Spravato has potential for misuse and is a controlled substance, which is why it must be administered in a certified medical facility under supervision. You cannot take it home. When used as prescribed in a monitored setting, the risk of addiction is minimal. We carefully screen patients and monitor for any signs of misuse.

While Spravato helps many patients, it doesn't work for everyone. If you don't see improvement after an adequate trial, we'll work with you to explore other options including different medications, therapy approaches, or other treatments. You're not giving up—you're continuing to search for what works for you.

Call us at (908) 450-7002 to schedule an initial consultation. We'll review your history, determine if Spravato is appropriate, verify your insurance coverage, and get you scheduled for your first treatment. The process typically takes 1-2 weeks from consultation to first treatment.
